Celebrating the life and legacy of Dennis Yeoman

Swim England News

Swim England is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dennis Yeoman, who died on Tuesday 17 March after a recent decline in health following his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease.

Dennis dedicated an extraordinary 58 years to aquatics. His volunteering journey began remarkably early – at just 17, he became Head Coach of Marlborough ASC, marking the start of a lifetime of service to the aquatics community.

He went on to hold a variety of roles, including Vice Chairman and Team Manager of Wroughton ASC, and progressed through officiating from Judge and Timekeeper to becoming an ASA Referee in 1975.

Dennis refereed at events of every level for both Great Britain and the ASA, and in 1984 officiated at the European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He later served as Lead Referee for the 1994 Youth Olympics in Bath.

In 1974, at the age of 26, Dennis became Honorary Secretary of Wiltshire ASA – a position he held for nearly three decades until 2002. He continued to support the county as a member of both the Management Committee and Emergency Committee until December 2025, and served as Wiltshire President in 1985.

Dennis’ influence grew nationally when he was elected to the ASA Committee in 1977, becoming one of its youngest members. In 1987, he collaborated on the important policy document ‘The Way Forward’ with David Sparks, and was later honoured with the ASA Gold Pin for long service.

In 1998, Dennis chose to retire early from his career as a Building Society Executive to dedicate even more of his time to the sport he loved.

He went on to serve the ASA as a consultant across a wide range of areas, including modernisation work, the introduction of British Age Group Categories (BAGCATS), the writing and delivery of Team Manager training, and collaborative work with the Irish ASA, the Gibraltar Government and the Gibraltar Swimming Federation.

His expertise saw him take up major international roles. Dennis served on the Commonwealth Games Board for 15 years and was appointed Aquatics Director for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He was Deck Manager at the London 2012 Olympic Games and later worked as Presentation Director for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

With an enthusiasm that spanned multiple aquatic disciplines, Dennis supported FINA Diving and FINA Diving Live TV at the World Cup in Sheffield and later became Field of Play Manager for Synchronised Swimming at the 2012 Olympics. He also oversaw swimming at the 2013 Youth Olympics and served as Chairman of the Swimming Trust.

His contributions were recognised through several prestigious honours, including Sport Administrator of the Year at the Commonwealth Sports Awards in 2010 and the Harold Fern Award in 2014.

Dennis’ impact on aquatics – nationally and internationally – was exceptional. His professionalism, passion and unwavering dedication enriched countless athletes, volunteers and colleagues.

He leaves behind a remarkable legacy and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
