Experts to examine ‘the GLP-1 effect’ at the One Swim England Summit
9 March 2026How aquatic facilities can play a pivotal role in supporting the nation’s health will be the focus of a thought‑provoking session at this year’s One Swim England Summit, as specialists unpack the rapidly evolving impact of GLP‑1 medications on weight management and long‑term wellbeing.
The session, titled The GLP‑1 Effect, will feature leading health and performance expert Oliver Patrick, alongside Jacqui Tillman, Aquatics and Wellbeing Director & Chief Executive of SLM Community Leisure Charitable Trust (Everyone Active). The discussion will be chaired by Rebecca Cox, Business Engagement Director at Swim England and Managing Director of the Institute of Swimming.
The use of GLP‑1 medications is expanding at pace, moving the conversation around weight management beyond short‑term interventions towards long‑term lifestyle transformation. As their use grows, so does the understanding that meaningful, sustainable health outcomes rely on more than medication alone, they depend on supportive, accessible environments that promote safe movement, strength, cardiovascular fitness and improved mental wellbeing. Physical activity remains a crucial companion to GLP 1 use, helping preserve muscle mass, enhance metabolic health, and reinforce long term behaviour change.
As part of the Summit’s Lead theme, Oliver will outline the emerging needs of GLP‑1 users and the implications for the swimming sector, and Jacqui will offer operational insight and member‑engagement perspective. Together, they will explore how aquatic facilities, programmes and staff training can evolve to support participants safely and effectively, positioning swimming as a cornerstone of holistic weight management, improved wellbeing, and reduced long term NHS costs.
Why attend this session?
This session is designed for anyone responsible for shaping aquatic programmes, environments or workforce development, those looking to better understand how swimming can support individuals using GLP‑1 medications. Attendees will gain a clearer picture of how the sector can evolve to provide safe, inclusive and effective pathways into activity for this growing population.
Join us at The Vox, Birmingham on Thursday 19 March 2026 and be part of the conversation shaping the future of aquatics.
