Ladies-only sessions to continue empowering women in Sandwell after 'overwhelmingly positive' feedback

A weekly ladies-only swimming programme at Sandwell Aquatics Centre is making a real difference to the lives of Asian Muslim women in Smethwick.

The programme is supporting physical and mental wellbeing, building confidence and helping participants embrace healthier lifestyles.

The sessions, designed to be culturally sensitive and inclusive, have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, many of whom are engaging with swimming for the first time.

The initiative has created a safe and welcoming space where women feel respected, supported and encouraged to prioritise their health.

Following on from the initial success of the sessions during the summer, they have now been renewed, with all participants requesting their continuation.

This initiative stems from a collaboration between a Smethwick-based independent charitable organisation, the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre (BIC), and local leisure provider, Sandwell Leisure Trust.

On the sessions, Khan said: “For many of our ladies, this has been their first opportunity to learn or improve their swimming skills in a setting that fully respects their modesty and cultural values.

“Beyond physical health, the sessions have helped to reduce feelings of isolation by providing a welcoming space for women to come together.”

The programme has proven to be more than just a chance to get active – it’s a catalyst for community cohesion and personal growth.

Participants have reported improved wellbeing, increased confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Grainger added: “These sessions are more than just about swimming – they are about building confidence, supporting physical and mental health and fostering a sense of belonging.

“We look forward to continuing this meaningful collaboration, working together to break down barriers, plus making sport and wellbeing accessible to all.”
