Swim England issue updated uniform guidance for officials

As part of Swim England’s commitment to make aquatics accessible for all, the national governing body are making changes to the technical officials’ uniform expectations when officiating at Swim England National events.

From 1 September 2023 – when officiating at Swim England National Events – technical officials’ uniform dress code will include black trousers/skirts/shorts.

The change has been made in a bid to be more inclusive, removing what was an unnecessary barrier to those who felt uncomfortable wearing white trousers, skirts or shorts on poolside.

This reinforces Swim England’s commitment to both its new Access Aquatics strategy and Heart of Aquatics – it’s safeguarding, welfare and culture plan – by listening to members and empowering the aquatics community.

‘A place where everyone feels comfortable’

Mike Hawkes, Swim England head of diversity and inclusion explained: “While some may see this as a small change, we view it as important to ensure that our officials feel comfortable.

“We believe this is one of the steps which will make our sport more inclusive and accessible for volunteers on poolside, so that everyone can enjoy the experience.

“We hope this decision helps to further promote the inclusive culture of aquatics and enable those officiating to volunteer without inhibitions and feel welcomed at our national events.”

Event promoters and the wider aquatics community are strongly encouraged to consider how their events can be more inclusive for all.
