Swim England announces Summit session focused on supporting junior-to-senior transition

The transition from junior to senior swimming is one of the most significant stages in an athlete’s journey. It’s a period that sees physical development, emotional maturity, lifestyle changes, nutrition and wider life pressures all intersect. Bringing the transition to the forefront of discussion, the ‘Guiding growth: Supporting swimmers through the junior-to-senior transition’ session at this year’s One Swim England Summit will explore how coaches, and even parents, can best support young swimmers as they take that step towards becoming a senior athlete.

Drawing on Swim England’s Physical Development Framework, Physical Preparation Lead, Gemma Hathaway will outline the key physical, psychological and social factors that are vital for young athletes to sustain long-term development. Whether it’s growth and growth patterns or performance expectations, Gemma will also highlight what young athletes need to do to sustain progression into senior swimming.

Gemma will be joined by Lisa Sharratt, Swim England’s Lead Physiotherapist, who will support Gemma to share insights into the physical stresses, injury risks and developmental considerations that coaches should be aware of when supporting swimmers. Alongside the Swim England duo will be former elite swimmer, Will Bell from AP Race, who will share his own journey through junior to senior transition and reflect on his own journey through the junior to senior transition and reflect on the challenges he faced transitioning into senior sport.

Designed for coaches and valuable for parents, this session emphasises practical and compassionate support for young swimmers as they step into senior performance. If you want to learn more about how you can aid your athletes throughout their transition and how you can support their physical needs, emotional development and lifestyle changes that influence their readiness to transition successfully into senior performance.

With a line-up that blends sport science expertise, real-world experience and practical advice, this session promises to provide attendees with actionable guidance they can take straight back to the poolside. Delegates will come away with a deeper understanding of how to keep athletes healthy, motivated and resilient during this pivotal stage – and how to create an environment that nurtures rather than overwhelms.

Whether you’re supporting a swimmer approaching their senior years or looking to strengthen your long-term athlete development approach, this session will offer fresh perspectives and evidence-informed strategies to help every young swimmer thrive.
