Swim England opening up the conversations on female health and wellbeing with Summit session
24 February 2026For many girls, puberty can begin as early as seven years old. It’s a stage of life marked by rapid physical, emotional and hormonal changes, which can have a significant impact on their confidence in and around water. These changes and transitions can leave girls feeling self-conscious, uncertain and embarrassed. Coupled with many members of the aquatic workforce feeling unsure about how to talk openly about puberty, periods and body image – the silence can unintentionally reinforce the stigma.
That silence has real consequences too. With 90% of females feeling as though they don’t know enough about how their menstrual cycle affects their participation in sport and training, and nearly 40% of teenage girls avoiding sport altogether when they’re on their period. Research from Women in Sport also shows that 43% of girls who previously saw themselves as ‘sporty’ disengage from sport after primary school – almost double the rate of boys. These gaps in awareness and confidence can be significant barriers, leading many girls to step away from the pool for good.
Aimed at arming coaches, teachers and parents with the awareness and understanding, the ‘Opening Up the Conversation on Female Health & Wellbeing: Puberty, Periods & Participation’ panel at the One Swim England Summit hopes to change that.
Chaired by Kelly Gordon, Executive Lead for NETBALLHer at England Netball, the panel brings together a powerful blend of medical expertise and sporting insight, including:
• Emily Allen, Swimming Product Manager at Places Leisure
• Dr Helen Kini, GP Partner
• Craig Robertson, Sport Scientist at Swim England
• Anna Hopkin, Olympian, Athlete, Development Ambassador at AP Race
Together, they’ll explore how those working with young female swimmers can better understand the physical changes girls face, recognise when they may be struggling, and respond in ways that empower them to stay active and engaged.
Why should I attend this session?
Rooted in the Inspire theme, this session will focus on equipping the aquatic workforce with the language, knowledge and confidence to support girls through some of the most influential years of their development.
We’ll provide you with clear, accessible information on puberty, periods, body image, wellbeing, nutrition and performance, while addressing the common myths and misunderstandings that can affect girls’ confidence and willingness to take part. You’ll learn how to ask the right questions, create psychologically safe spaces, and respond in ways that help girls feel informed, supported and understood.
By opening up the conversation, removing stigma, building understanding and fostering inclusion, this session champions a future where no girl feels held back by puberty or her period, and every girl feels informed, supported and confident in and around the water.
Join us on Thursday 19 March at The One Swim England Summit and feel inspired about helping the next generation of female swimmers.
