Swimathon Foundation grants further £30,000 to aquatics organisations

The Swimathon Foundation has granted a further £30,000 to aquatics clubs and swim schools across the country after a second round of funding was announced by the charity.

After first being launched in May 2020 in response to the ongoing pandemic and its impact on the wider swimming community, Swimathon’s Covid-19 Relief Fund was extended after the charity realised ‘additional support was required’.

A total of £18,875 was shared between 93 Swim England-affiliated clubs and swim school, building on the initial £29,765 that was allocated to 61 affiliated organisations in 2020.

To date, more than 150 of Swim England’s affiliated organisations have received funding totalling £48,640.

‘Play its part’

Anthony Kendall OBE, Chair of Swimathon Foundation, said: “The last year has had a huge impact on society as a whole.

“Organisations in the sporting sector have really struggled and the Foundation has been determined to play its part in supporting those smaller, local groups that are the foundation of swimming participation across the UK.

“We have been absolutely taken aback by the number of people who need help during these times and I am proud that we are able to offer some financial support to our wonderful swimming community.

“With the reopening of pools on the horizon, we hope the whole swimming community can get back to normality in the coming weeks and months and we will continue to help in whatever way we can.”

The Swimathon Foundation is the charity behind ‘Swimathon’ – the world’s largest annual pool based fundraising swim. It also runs the Open Water Swimathon, School Swimathon, and Marathon Swims campaigns.

Since it was established in 1997, the charity has raised more than £50 million for various causes across the UK.

The 2020 Swimathon, which was due to take place between 27-29 March, was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, a total of £1 million was raised after the charity facilitated a virtual version of the event that participants could take part in.
