Everything you need to know about the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

The waiting is finally over … the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games officially open today.

Diver Jack Laugher and weightlifter Emily Campbell are the Team England flagbearers for the opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium.

The action begins on Friday 29 July and here is everything you need to know about the swimming and diving competitions at the Games…

Aquatics venue

More medals will be won at the newly-constructed Sandwell Aquatics Centre than any other Commonwealth Games venue.

The £73m facility is the only new venue specifically built for the Games and can accommodate 5,000 spectators during Birmingham 2022.

Throughout the 11 days of the competition, visitors will be able to take part in a number of Have a Go sessions – and have the chance to win two shirts, one signed by the Team England swimming squad and one autographed by the divers.

After the Games have finished, 4,000 temporary seats will be removed and the pool will reopen as a community facility in the summer of 2023.

Coverage

A live blog, full reports and reaction from the heats and finals sessions throughout the swimming and diving competitions will be published on the Swim England website, swimming.org.

There will also be instant updates on the Team England performances on the Swim England social media channels … Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – so why not give them a follow?

Tag us into your social posts and let us know how you’re cheering on Team England’s swimmers and divers. We’re @Swim_England on Twitter and @SwimEngland on Facebook and Instagram.

The BBC will be broadcasting every session from the Commonwealth Games.

In addition to 200 hours of live coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Three, there will also be up to 11 streams on BBC iPlayer and The BBC Sport website.
