Becoming a swimming teacher

Swimming Teaching can be an exciting and fulfilling career. Many teachers get tremendous satisfaction from helping people to learn an important life skill and seeing swimmers progress and develop.

Also, the flexible hours can give you the opportunity to fit your career around looking after your children. Or other personal, study or work commitments.

Key Qualifications Needed

If you want to be a Swimming Teacher you need to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Swim England Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) Qualification

This course develops your knowledge, skills and abilities as a Swimming Assistant. It will enable you to actively support a qualified Swimming Teacher in the delivery of a pre-prepared session.

You’ll need to be 16 years-old and it will take around 4 days (depending on your method of study and your training provider)

  • Swim England Level 2 Teaching Swimming Qualification

This course develops your knowledge, skills and abilities as a Swimming Teacher. It builds on the Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification and gives you the skills to independently deliver swimming lessons.

You must be at least 16 years-old and hold the Level 1 Swimming Assistant in Teaching or equivalent Swim England qualification certificated after 1994. This course will take around eight days (depending on your method of study and your training provider)

Finding Training

You can train with any Swim England Qualifications Approved Training Centre. These centres deliver training and assess Swim England qualifications in England, Wales and overseas.

All are checked and regulated by the Swim England Qualifications – who develop the qualifications for the aquatics industry – to ensure they meet the required standards in training delivery.

Continual Professional Development (CPD)

Once you have qualified if you want take further qualifications there are a range of career options for you to explore including teaching adult and child classes, instructing aqua fitness, and coaching.

However, your learning journey should always include regular updates to your knowledge and skills through Continuing Professional Development (CPDs) training courses.

These short seminars are invaluable in keeping you up to date with industry insights, and help to develop new skills and upgrade techniques.
