Help children Get Safe 4 Summer
The sun may not always shine during British Summertime but some children may be lucky enough to be going on holiday by the sea. Or maybe they’re heading to have a picnic by a lake, on a riverbank or by a canal. But for a small minority their day will be ruined because they just don’t know how to be safe when they are around water. This is why the ASA runs the Get Safe 4 Summer campaign.
The campaign is aimed at children (and their parents) and tries to make children aware of the dangers posed by open water.
The objectives of the campaign are to:
- Promote and raise awareness of the importance of learning to swim and achieving water confidence
- Increase knowledge and practical water safety skills.
- Raise awareness that organised, supervised water based activity is fun and safe.
- Introduce new water based skills such as snorkelling.
- Promote swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle and family activity.
- Provide the information in a fun and memorable way.
Selected events are held around the country, where youngsters are taught everything from how they can spot the dangers themselves to how to act in an emergency.
Parents can learn more about how to keep their children safe with our water safety tips or children can visit our water safety pages for under-16s.
Local Events
Every year, the ASA invites leisure centres and schools to hold their own local events and provides guidance on how to organise this. The Local Event information Pack gives details on how to set an agenda for the day and provides tools such as quizes and water safety advice.
