Sir Peter Heatly

March 2012 – The three-times Commonwealth Games diving champion reveals that he has been to every Games since 1950 – and is now hoping to see his grandson follow in his footsteps

The hardest thing I’ve had to do is…

become the first British person to do a three-and-a-half somersault. It was at Wood Green Baths, north London, in 1955. An English coach was meant to meet me but was late. After looking at the 10m board for an hour, I gave my 8mm camera to the lifeguard and showed him how to operate it. I was running out of time and just had to go for it. I managed the dive, then had a few nervous days waiting to get the film developed. Fortunately the cine film came out and I still have the evidence now.
