Swim a Song

Swim a Song is part of the foundation of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework. It’s a fun and innovative programme specifically designed for babies and young children who are new to swimming and focuses on increasing water confidence and starting to familiarize the young swimmer with the frameworks essential skills.

Swim a Song is great to use for younger swimmers not yet ready for the Duckling awards.

The programme can cater for babies from birth with limited or no coordination through to those able to move more independently who are water confident and interlinks with the Duckling awards which are a natural progression for toddlers who are slightly older and more independent.

Do you use the ASA Learn to Swim Framework and not use Swim a Song- hopefully the changes we have made will help you to implement Swim a Song better...
Whilst the Swim a Song programme has been around for some time we have not until now clearly aligned it to the ASA Learn to Swim Framework, which has meant it has been harder for teachers to link it into their existing Ducklings programmers and ASA Learn to Swim Framework Stages 1-7.

By clearly highlighting the core aquatic skills in the Swim a Song programme we have been able to provide a series of clear outcomes for Swim a Song which we hope will make it easier for Teachers to use and link into their existing lesson plans and schemes of work.

This gives ASA Teachers two options now with regards to Swim a Song:

1) Use the outcomes below to develop your own scheme of work, lesson programs and song and games activities.

2) Purchase the existing Swim a Song resources and use the suggested songs, lesson plans and resources within these packs.

Any organisation who already uses the Swim-a-Song programme can continue to use their existing packs and CDs and the Swim a Song Awards. Likewise we would actively encourage teachers to continue to use song and rhyme to help provide a fun and enjoyable experience for this younger age group.

We would recommend Teachers attend the Adult and Child CPD prior to delivering these awards and hope to bring further ASA Learn to Swim Framework Foundation stage resources to you in the near future. Please e-mail npts@swimming.org to register an interest in receiving NPTS updates.

NB These awards are also recommended for children and adults with severe learning disabilities who would benefit from a structured swimming programme focused on increasing water confidence and promoting motor development.

Games

As well as the activities included in the existing Swim a Song pack, teachers can also use games from the framework Games Pack.

The Humpty Dumpty game is an excellent example of the type of song-led activity that can be easily used as this stage. Parents can lift their babies onto pool side and hold them in a seated position singing:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses, and all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again!

After the second line parents can lift their babies into the water and continue the song in the water.
